Melatonin & alternatives
Is there a sleep drink without melatonin?
Updated October 5, 2026 · Answer by Noddie Night
Yes. Herbal sleep drinks use plants instead of the hormone melatonin. Noddie Night, for example, is a ready-to-drink herbal sleep drink made with chamomile, valerian root, skullcap, ashwagandha and blue vervain, with no melatonin and no caffeine. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says evidence for herbs like chamomile and valerian is limited or inconsistent.
Many non-melatonin options exist, from herbal teas to ready-to-drink blends, and none is proven to work for everyone. NCCIH notes that chamomile has a traditional use for sleep without conclusive clinical evidence, and valerian trials are inconsistent. Herbal does not mean risk-free: valerian should not be taken with alcohol or sedatives, and ashwagandha should be avoided in pregnancy.
Check any label for ingredients, serving size and warnings. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication (especially sedatives) or have a medical condition.
