Can I switch from melatonin to an herbal sleep drink?

Updated October 5, 2026 · Answer by Noddie Night

Many people do, but check with your doctor or pharmacist first, especially if you take medication or have a health condition. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says evidence for herbs like valerian and chamomile is limited or inconsistent, so keep expectations modest. Change one thing at a time and keep your bedtime and wind-down routine steady.

There is no evidence-based schedule for switching. A practical approach is to keep the same bedtime, light habits and wind-down routine, then introduce one new thing so you can tell what is helping. Avoid layering a new herbal product on top of melatonin on the same night unless a professional says it is fine, because sedating effects can add up.

NCCIH says valerian should not be taken with alcohol or sedatives, and ashwagandha should be avoided in pregnancy. Noddie Night contains no melatonin, so there is no overlap with a melatonin supplement.

If poor sleep continues for weeks, talk to your doctor; cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia is often recommended first.
