Is it okay to take melatonin every night?
Updated October 5, 2026 · Answer by Noddie Night
Short-term use appears safe for most adults, but taking melatonin nightly for a long time is not well studied. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says information on the long-term safety of melatonin supplements is lacking. The Sleep Foundation advises speaking to a doctor if you need melatonin every night for more than a few weeks.
The Sleep Foundation says melatonin supplements are not believed to be habit-forming and have relatively mild side effects. Even so, needing it every night is worth discussing, because the cause of poor sleep may not be low melatonin. NCCIH says stronger recommendations favor cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia over daily supplements.
Supplement amounts can also be off. A 2017 study of 31 products found that the melatonin amount often did not match the label. The Sleep Foundation says melatonin is not recommended for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who have bleeding disorders, depression, seizures or an organ transplant.
Talk to your doctor about nightly use, especially if you take other medicines.
