Melatonin & alternatives
What is a natural alternative to melatonin?
Updated October 5, 2026 · Answer by Noddie Night
Options people often consider include traditionally used herbs such as chamomile and valerian root, plus habits like a steady bedtime and a calming wind-down routine. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says evidence for these herbs is limited or inconsistent, and that natural does not always mean safe. Nothing works for everyone, so try one change at a time.
NCCIH says chamomile has a traditional use for sleep but no conclusive clinical evidence, valerian trials show inconsistent results, and kava has been linked to serious liver injury. Melatonin itself helps mainly with jet lag and shift work, and guidelines recommend against it for chronic insomnia, so neither melatonin nor the herbs are a sure answer.
Behavior-based approaches are well supported. NCCIH's melatonin page notes that cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia is favored over supplements.
Noddie Night is an herbal sleep drink with five herbs and no melatonin. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication (especially sedatives) or have a medical condition.
