Bedtime herbs explained
Can you take valerian and chamomile together?
Updated October 5, 2026 · Answer by Noddie Night
Many people do take valerian and chamomile together, and the two are often blended in evening teas. Both are traditionally used before bed, and each has its own cautions. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says valerian should not be combined with alcohol or sedatives, and that chamomile may interact with warfarin and possibly with sedatives.
Combining herbs can add up their effects, and there is little research on this pairing specifically. If you are new to either herb, try one at a time so you can tell what suits you. NCCIH says valerian is generally safe for short-term use at 300 to 600 mg daily for up to 6 weeks, but long-term safety is unknown, while chamomile is likely safe in the amounts found in teas.
Avoid alcohol with these herbs, and check with a pharmacist if you take sedatives, a blood thinner or other medicines. People allergic to ragweed or daisy-family plants should be careful with chamomile. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition.
