Bedtime herbs explained
Can I drink herbal sleep drinks with alcohol?
Updated October 5, 2026 · Answer by Noddie Night
It is best not to. Alcohol and sedating herbs can add to each other's drowsiness, and alcohol also disrupts sleep itself. The Sleep Foundation says alcohol reduces REM sleep and causes lighter, more fragmented sleep later in the night, and experts advise stopping alcohol three to four hours before bed. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says valerian should not be taken with alcohol.
Alcohol may help you drop off faster at first, but the body clears roughly one drink per hour, and sleep turns lighter and more broken in the second half of the night. According to Sleep Foundation data, nearly 90% of regular evening drinkers report at least one sleep-related problem.
Sleep Foundation also warns that mixing alcohol with sleeping pills or sedative medications can be extremely dangerous, because both slow the central nervous system. Noddie Night's label says not to combine it with alcohol.
If you drink and also take any herbal or prescription sleep aid, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about what is safe for you.
