What are the side effects of valerian root?

Updated October 5, 2026 · Answer by Noddie Night

Valerian root can cause headache, stomach upset, mental dullness, excitability, uneasiness and vivid dreams, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). Most adults tolerate it for short periods. NCCIH says it is generally safe for up to 6 weeks at 300 to 600 mg daily, but long-term safety is not known.

Cleveland Clinic also lists dizziness and next-day drowsiness, and says any rash, hives or swelling needs prompt medical attention. NCCIH notes that rare withdrawal symptoms, such as anxiety, irritability and sleeplessness, have been described after suddenly stopping long-term use. Rare liver injury has been reported, usually with other herbs in the mix.

Valerian should not be taken along with alcohol or sedatives, because the sleepy effects can add up. It may also interact with sleep medications, muscle relaxants and some medicines for depression or anxiety.

Little is known about valerian in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or have a medical condition, and stop using it and get help if you have a serious reaction.
