What is the best bedroom temperature for sleep?

Updated October 5, 2026 · Answer by Noddie Night

A cool bedroom helps. Sleep Foundation says the best room temperature for sleep is roughly 65 degrees Fahrenheit (about 18 degrees Celsius), with a range of 65 to 68 degrees F. Your core body temperature naturally drops as sleep approaches, and a cool room supports that drop.

The drop in body temperature starts about two hours before you fall asleep, at the same time melatonin is released. A cool room supports this process. A room that is too warm can reduce slow-wave sleep and make you feel tired the next day.

Individual comfort differs, and other sleep guides give slightly different ranges, so treat the numbers as a starting point. Adjust by a degree or two until it feels right for you.

To keep cool, use breathable bedding and light pajamas, open a window if the air is cooler outside, use a fan, or take a warm shower an hour or two before bed so your body sheds heat afterward. If hot flashes or night sweats wake you often, tell your doctor.
