Is it bad to eat right before bed?
Updated October 5, 2026 · Answer by Noddie Night
Eating a large meal right before bed can disrupt sleep. Most experts advise stopping eating 2 to 4 hours before bedtime. High-calorie meals eaten less than an hour before bed can make it take longer to fall asleep, and eating close to bedtime is related to acid reflux and heartburn.
People who ate or drank within an hour of bedtime were also more likely to wake after falling asleep. Foods that are spicy, fatty or acidic, and caffeine and alcohol, are more likely to cause trouble at night.
A small snack is generally fine, and it may even help if hunger would keep you awake. Choices such as a banana, a few nuts, a kiwi or a little milk are often suggested. Newer evidence shows a more complex picture, so listen to your own body.
If you have diabetes, ask your doctor what bedtime snack suits you. If heartburn wakes you at night regularly, raise it with your healthcare provider.
