Night waking & falling asleep
How much sleep do adults need?
Updated October 5, 2026 · Answer by Noddie Night
The CDC says adults aged 18 to 60 need 7 or more hours of sleep a night. Adults aged 61 to 64 need 7 to 9 hours, and adults 65 and older need 7 to 8 hours. These are general ranges, and some people feel best toward the higher end.
Hours in bed are only part of the picture. Sleep quality and regular timing matter too, and so does how you feel the next day. If you wake rested and stay alert, you are likely getting enough.
The CDC suggests going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, keeping the bedroom quiet, relaxing and cool, turning off screens at least 30 minutes before bed, and avoiding heavy meals, alcohol and late caffeine.
See your healthcare provider if you have trouble falling asleep, wake up repeatedly, or feel tired even after getting enough hours. Those can be signs of a sleep disorder such as insomnia, sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome.
